We believe that every child should own their own book.

about the program

Operation School Bell is the signature philanthropic program of Assistance League, serving local communities by providing clothing and supplies as well as helping meet the health, hunger and literacy needs of those served. The execution of the program is determined by each chapter.

Early Reading provides pre-literacy training materials to preschool, kindergarten, and early elementary school students.

Assistance League volunteers visit classrooms that have students with specific needs to read to the children, work on a related activity, and present the book to students to take home for their home library.

why it’s important

The program provides a brand new book to children who - often - have never owned one. Furthermore, it provides one-on-one time with an adult to share the story and do an activity.

The books and activities are chosen according to the age/grade level and are thematically based to align with the classroom’s curriculum. Studies show that early access to reading promotes better academic success.
