We believe that every child should own their own book.

about the program

Operation School Bell is the signature philanthropic program of Assistance League.  At work in our local communities, we help to meet health, hunger and literacy needs by providing clothing, supplies and books.  The execution of the program is determined by each chapter.

Early Reading promotes literacy through small group reading, and new books for children to share with their families.

Assistance League volunteers visit preschool, kindergarten, and early elementary classrooms with books specifically chosen by teachers. After reading the story and working on a related activity, the books are presented to students to take home for their home library.

why it’s important

The program provides a brand new book to children who - often - have never owned one. Furthermore, it provides one-on-one time with an adult to share the story and do an activity.

The books and activities are chosen according to the age/grade level and are thematically based to align with the classroom’s curriculum. Studies show that early access to reading promotes better academic success.
