Students in Darien School District # 61 received coats, hats and gloves on an unusually warm 80 degree fall day - kindergarteners through second graders at Mark De Lay School in the morning and the third through fifth graders at Lace School in the afternoon Sixth through eighth graders in the district were part of the Kohl's Shopping Days. Some of the Lace students talked about the coats they received last year, and outgrew. They didn't need their coats today, but winter is just weeks away.
Thanks to the organizational skills of social worker Meghan Radtke and three very helpful parent volunteers, a small group of Assistance League members fitted 220 kids with new coats in less time that expected. We even swapped out some coats for larger sizes and had them back to the school the same day so no one felt left out.
Operation School Bell added Eisenhower Junior High in Darien to our Kohl's Shopping Days on October 2 & 3. Eisenhower teens came out in large numbers and were so appreciative of our offer to shop for $75 worth of school appropriate clothing and/or shoes. Some were great with the calculator in their heads and maximized their shopping dollars. Other participating schools included Burr Ridge Middle School, Hinsdale Middle School and Clarendon Hills Middle Schools.
